  • One hundred building material samples collected from water-damaged buildings in Sweden.
  • Analysis by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry for a panel of mycotoxins.
  • Substrates included gypsum, wood, and other common construction materials.

What they found

  • Sixty-six percent of samples were reported positive for at least one mycotoxin.
  • Trichothecenes, sterigmatocystin, gliotoxin, aflatoxin B1, and satratoxins G and H were among those detected.
  • Detections were reported across a range of substrate types.

What this study does not establish

  • Material sampling; airborne concentrations and occupant exposure were not measured.
  • Samples came from buildings investigated for damage, not a random sample.
