Evening room light exposure measured against melatonin onset and duration in healthy adults
Gooley JJ, Chamberlain K, Smith KA, et al. (2011) · The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism
The controlled study reported that exposure to room light (less than 200 lux) before bedtime suppressed melatonin onset in 99% of participants and shortened melatonin duration by about 90 minutes compared with dim light, with a 50% or greater suppression during typical sleep hours.
What they studied
116 healthy adults aged 18–30, inpatient laboratory protocol
What they found
The controlled study reported that exposure to room light (less than 200 lux) before bedtime suppressed melatonin onset in 99% of participants and shortened melatonin duration by about 90 minutes compared with dim light, with a 50% or greater suppression during typical sleep hours.
