Lung responses measured in mice exposed to purified toxins from building-isolated Penicillium species
Rand TG, Mahoney M, White K, Miller JD (2006) · Toxicological Sciences 87(1):213–222
Purified toxins from two Penicillium species isolated from buildings produced lung inflammation in mice within hours of instillation.
What they studied
Purified brevianamide A, mycophenolic acid, and roquefortine C from Penicillium brevicompactum and P. chrysogenum isolated from buildings.
Intratracheal instillation into mice.
Measurement of inflammatory and cytotoxic endpoints in lung tissue and lavage fluid.
What they found
Significant inflammatory responses were reported within six hours of instillation.
Brevianamide A was additionally reported to produce cytotoxicity and vascular leakage.
Responses were reported for purified toxins in the absence of spore exposure.
What it does not establish
An animal study using purified compounds at experimental doses.
Instillation is not equivalent to inhalation of building air.
No human exposure or outcome measured.
This entry reports the study. It is not a statement about any building Sage Co. designs or constructs.
