Chaetomium globosum prevalence in surveyed water-damaged buildings and metabolite production on building materials

Fogle MR, Douglas DR, Jumper CA, Straus DC (2007) · Mycopathologia 164(1):49–56

A survey of water-damaged buildings reported Chaetomium globosum in about half of the buildings sampled, and laboratory growth on building materials produced cytotoxic metabolites.

What they studied

A survey of 794 water-damaged buildings for the presence of Chaetomium globosum.

Laboratory culture of isolates on common building materials.

Measurement of chaetoglobosin production and cytotoxicity against tissue culture cells.

What they found

The authors reported Chaetomium globosum in 49% of the surveyed buildings.

Isolates were reported to produce chaetoglobosins A and C when grown on building materials.

The produced metabolites were reported to be cytotoxic to tissue culture cells at the tested concentrations.

What it does not establish

Presence in a building is not a measure of occupant exposure.

Cytotoxicity in cell culture does not establish a human health outcome.

The survey population is not a random sample of housing stock.

This entry reports the study. It is not a statement about any building Sage Co. designs or constructs.
